Ignite-nm was good, although it kinda felt like being whisked past a buffet table and getting a few small samples to nibble on. It would be neat if the format was set to use these events as a screening, and the favorite ones (group vote or whatnot) did full presentations later on in one big conference, or before/after other ignite format micro presentations.

but as bite sized samplers it was pretty neat, although i was sleep deprived, and kinda too warm/crowded, so i was glad to get out of there and home to sit in my skivvies and sit infront of my swampcooler with a mug of ice cold water.

San Diego Appearance Schedule

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 6:33 PM
I'll be just kinda staggerin' around bleary-eyed at two o'clock in the morning, trying to light the wrong end of a cigarette with a borrowed lighter with a picture of naked cartoon boobs on it. If you see me and come talk to me you will not understand what I am saying, and it will be awkward, and it will make you not enjoy my comics anymore.

I will not actually enter the convention center, except at the very end, to fill out a form.

These look awesome!

Too bad I work during this time, but maybe someone else with a coding interest can play.

Sometimes being an adult is awesome. I am having Starbucks Java Chip Frappuccino ice cream for lunch and don't need to fear being yelled at for it later. I don't think I'll get through the entire pint, though... :D

One of our interns looked at it longingly and was trying to get the rest of his lunch crew to also find starbucks ice cream for lunch. It was all my fault though-I'm a complete trouble maker. I saw him, said hello, showed him my pint of ice cream, and said "nutritious lunch!"

I'm a horrible person.

A Magical Day

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 1:09 PM

My father is an excellent gardener, and could grow enough vegetables to keep up fed all through the winter. Turnips are amazing because they are root vegetables and so if you pick them and put them in soil in the cellar they last for ages and ages. For more information about turnips, see every day of my childhood.

I have the cold from Hell. I managed to get through the beautiful wedding last weekend without dying, but today... I am miserable.

Apologies in advance if anyone who was at the wedding/reception/what-have-you ends up with this. Had I known, I wouldn't have gone! (Or would have decorated a swine flu/cough mask thing to match my outfit...)

I've also got a sty on my left eye, woo.

So, now that I've whined at you all--how's your day going? Tell me something happy and awesome so I can live vicariously. :)

MAGIC FLU

To read the rest of this comic please visit TheaterHopper.com

I totally bungled this comic last night as I was drawing it because I couldn’t figure out how to draw a pig that looked right. You’d think me being the Iowa boy that I am, I would have a library of pig references to draw from. Not the case. I live in the suburbs.

Anyway, it is fact that actor Rupert Grint contracted a case of swine flu recently. He’s okay now, but when I heard that news, there was no way I wasn’t going to work it into the comic somehow.

As I lay daydreaming yesterday, the thought of a vomiting pig entered into my mind and it’s pretty much impossible NOT to go forward with that kind of thing once it worms its way into your brain.

I think if I had to choose, Ron Weasley is probably my favorite character in the Harry Potter movies. Not just because the character is so pathetic, but because Rupert Grint does such a thorough job portraying him that way.

Grint as an actor is an underdog favorite of mine as well. I know he’s acted in a few things beyond the Harry Potter movies, but just looking at the guy and acknowledging his hangdog, unconventional looks – I’m pretty sure the gravy train is going to end for him once the last Potter film leaves theaters.

Daniel Radcliffe… Emma Watson… they’ll still have careers. If Grint lines up acting work after Harry Potter, I will be truly surprised.

Not much else for me to talk about today. Well, except that I heard through the grapevine that a movie starring Forest Whitaker, Elijah Wood and Adrien Brody called The Experiment is shooting here in Des Moines and they’re looking for extras in a protest scene at the state Capital tomorrow night. Someone passed along an 800 number you can call to get information about participating. They need about 300 people and I’m going to see if I can get in on the action.

I’ll let you know if anything develops on that front.

Otherwise, I might post some more trailers and stuff to the site soon. You guys really seem to be digging that, so I’m game if you are!

Talk to you soon!

It's like our own tiny TED

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 9:15 AM
This has either been really poorly promoted, or I just haven't been looking in the right places, but I just discovered that Ignite NM is tonight at 6:30 in the UNM SUB.

From what I understand, Ignite is kind of modeled after TED, in that it's a series of short presentations on a variety of tech-related subjects, given by people who are passionate enough about those subjects to sign up to present about them.

The lineup looks pretty intriguing, and includes presentations on video game development in NM, renewable energy, the development of the Quelab "hackerspace", and flow cytometry, among other things.

Admission appears to be free.

Good things (Wednesday, I guess... (:)

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Do want!

...
Other good things:

* Fantastic friends and the prospect of seeing many in the next week!
* Bought 2 new tea sets yesterday, since I am down to 1 with the roommates taking theirs
* I joined a new lj community the other day and it makes me desperately want to create lately.
* I'm going to learn how to make lace. Plain-ol'-knitting isn't fancy enough for me anymore, apparently.
* Not having to save for a wedding so being able to save for other things we need.
* Hanging out in the new pillow-room/tea room with my hubby in the evenings and having him like it.
* Eating blueberries, homemade beef jerky, and a boiled egg for snacks/lunch today.
* Looking forward to fresh eggs and vegetables tomorrow, one in exchange for money and the other in exchange for beef jerky.
* Having roommate2 look through my house and only find a couple of other things that need to be completed soon and give me a list of things to buy, none overly pricey. We will get it fixed up and on the market soon!
* Roommate1 cleaning and cleaning and cleaning yesterday.

Things I need to do this week:
* Go to the store and buy things, particularly diet coke for tonight's guests
* Go to Lowe's with roommate2 and buy what he needs to fix up the house after dinner this evening
* Hang up the wall hangings in my shiny new tea room, including shelves for tea cups and plants
* Take pictures of completed room and post to lj and 2 communities.
* Visit a friend and borrow some DVDs for Sunday's Harry-Potter review. If you want to spend Sunday morning watching Harry Potter movies, let me know. I need to catch the husband up!
* Return my cable modem and cut off my internet service at the old house

I've recently started a discussion forum for art and artists in Albuquerque. The forum is now live and open to everyone.

abqartists.com/forum

The board has topics like Art and the City, Art at UNM, and general topics like Theory, Technique, etc. Also, there is a public announcements board that everyone is welcome to post anything art related. We're just getting started and you're welcome to join in!
